to grow, to get bigger
When we read an event symbol we look at the picture on the left and try to guess how that picture would have to change in order to become the picture on the right. In the example above, the square is getting bigger. The twisty arrow represents the transformation of the picture on the left into the picture on the right.
just beginning to grow (the event is in process)
halfway through getting bigger
just finishing growing (the event is in process)
not yet started growing (an unspecified amount of time will elapse before the event gets started)
already finished growing (an unspecified amount of time has elapsed since the event ended)
to become clear, to understand, to figure out
to blow something up
is in the process of solving (halfway through solving)
to die
to turn on
Sometimes the picture on the left is the same or similar to the picture on the right. In this case we can just put one picture beneath the twisty arrow:
to rain
Because time must elapse for an event to take place, the twisty arrow is sometimes called the "little timeline". It represents time elapsed over the course of an event. But the little timeline has a big brother - the "big timeline". Click next to learn about the big timeline.
